A: For our credit union, the top three priorities an Assistant Branch Manager can focus on to be well positioned for promotion to a Branch Manager role are:

  1. Be an effective coach:
    • Conduct regular coaching sessions with direct reports to provide feedback and set clear expectations is a great way to manage effective working relationships.
    • Encourage employees to make recommendations rather than just providing them with answers to drive employee growth and motivation.
    • Hold engaging meetings that will inspire and involve employees is a great way to motivate employee performance.
  2. Be a role model for service delivery:
    • By engaging in meaningful conversations with members, you can better cultivate a members-first service strategy.
    • Coach employees with the view that delivering excellent service to members is the most important part of our roles.
  3. Prepare development plans:
    • In conjunction with employees, prepare a focused development plan to ensure employees have the knowledge to effectively do their job.
    • Mentor employees in their development of knowledge to ensure they are meet member/client expectations from a service level as well as uncovering needs or future business.
    • For internal succession and those employees wanting to develop in other roles, lead their development path by creating a plan together.
