A: I’ve only actually read a handful of books in my entire life, cover to cover. One of those books was Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. A lot of you may have heard of the 10,000 Hour Rule and that most professional Hockey Players are born in the first quarter of the calendar year, this is the book that coined those theories. The lasting impression this book left on me is significant and I think every young leader and parent needs to read it.

In the book he explains in his opinion why some people succeed more than others. A major part of success is being ready to seize opportunities as they present themselves to us, even if by luck. When I was starting my career it became apparent to me quickly that I was not going to advance until my boss retired, which was not for a while. An opportunity came up in the most inopportune moment, so I took that as my chance to take my career to the next level. The opportunity involved stepping way outside my comfort zone but has been worth every step since. Had I not been prepared to take the opportunity I would have missed it. My advice is by preparing yourself through hard work and education, you will be able to seize opportunities as they present themselves, especially if they scare you.
