Q: Did formal education help you get to your position, or do you advise taking on specific positions for experience?

A: Formal education has definitely helped get me to this point. It opens doors and shows prospective employers that you were able to start something and finish it, which automatically shows a level of commitment and competence. Add to the fact that you were able to do it while surviving off of Kraft Dinner and lunch meat also adds to that commitment piece.

That being said, formal education opens the door, only you can make yourself walk through it. Nothing can substitute for real world work experience and the lessons learned from working in various areas of an organization. Taking chances and moving laterally at times can be so crucial to becoming the well rounded employee that hiring managers are looking for.
