Job Description

Basic Function

The Senior Technical Writer manages projects of considerable complexity involving the analysis of changes in financial services legislation, and the preparation and revision of written materials relating to retail and small business banking products to support credit unions in meeting regulatory requirements. The incumbent provides project leadership, technical advice and mentorship to more junior staff members on the team.

The Senior Technical Writer’s assignments are of considerable complexity, with the incumbent leading or working on large scale projects involving wholesale revision of current material and development of new materials. Project life may be twelve months or more in duration.

Primary Accountabilities:

  • In consultation with the Manager and Product Manager, develops project plans for complex initiatives, working closely with other departments and stakeholders in planning project activities and timelines. 
  • Working with the Product Manager, ensures that smaller portions of projects are assigned accordingly to Regulatory & Compliance Analysts, providing technical guidance and project management expertise to ensure work meets requirements, established milestones and department standards. 
  • Analyzes legislative developments of considerable scope and complexity, identifies potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk, and determines the need for revisions in previously published materials and/or the development of new materials as required.
  • Strong ability to analyze, research, design, write and edit a wide range of typical workplace documents of considerable complexity to support operating and legislative requirements.
  • Develops and implements corrective procedures and forms of considerable complexity in order to resolve problematic issues and provides general guidance to credit union managers on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future. Consults with the Corporate Solicitor as needed to resolve difficult legal and compliance issues.
  • Studies, researches and analyzes information regarding the specifications, operational aspects and legislative requirements of Central 1’s products and services, consulting with other departments (such as Legal Counsel, Payment Services Operations, Product Development, Risk Management, and Registered Financial Services) as needed.
  • Develops new and revises existing policy considerations, procedures, forms and contracts of considerable complexity for the general operation of the various manuals managed by the department.
  • Coordinates the development of diagrams, charts, tables and completed examples to illustrate specified procedures or process sequence.
  • Utilizing strong project management skills, oversees writing assignments to ensure that department style guidelines and standards are met.
  • Reviews documents with the Product Manager, the Manager and/or Central 1 client departments; discusses required revisions, oversees revisions, and obtains final sign-off.
  • Working closely with other Product Compliance & Design staff, assists in writing and reviewing policies and related material for publication, ensuring that records, files, and procedure/form revisions are maintained.
  • Observes production, developmental, and experimental activities to determine operating procedure and detail as needed.
  • Able to adapt easily to changing priorities and business needs, work on multiple projects with conflicting deadlines, and provide technical leadership and mentorship to more junior team members.
  • Performs other duties in the department as necessary to meet critical production deadlines.


Education and Certification

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics or Law (or related analytical field)
  • Relevant professional certifications (CAMS, CFE, CRM) and/or technical writing certificate are beneficial.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the methods, standards and best practices relating to technical writing and policy analysis.
  • Experience reviewing, analyzing and summarizing legislation, regulations and case law precedents that pertain to the broader financial services sector and credit unions.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with internal and external clients to understand, gather and communicate regulatory issues, changes and requirements.
  • Strong skills in project management and leadership in a financial services environment.
  • At least 5-7 years of related policy experience in a regulatory, compliance or financial services role.
