Job Title: Vice President of Credit

Reports to: President and CEO

Location: Head Office – 698 King St. E. Hamilton


The Vice President of Credit reports directly to the President and CEO and assumes the overall responsibility for MCU’s retail and commercial lending portfolio. This includes managing the lending branch and administration lending staff, implementing sound business practices, maintaining proper lending policies and procedures and will be a point of escalation for member concerns. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, this position participates in the development of corporate strategies and polices, identifies short and long term objectives and contributes to the design and implementation of the annual budget and business plan.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Directly manage all branch lending staff, ensuring they are trained and are following all lending policies and procedures. Prepare and evaluate their individual performance plans annually. Ensure that all changes are communicated in a timely manner and ongoing training takes place as required.

· Support lending activities of Solution Centre as necessary.

· Develop, implement and maintain sound lending business practices, policies and procedures, ensuring they are all in accordance with all regulatory requirements including DICO, FSCO, Credit Union and Caisses Populaires Act, and any other regulations as needed.

· Update policies and procedures as required and ensure that all staff are aware and trained on any and all updates.

· Chair of the Credit Committee, works with the committee to adjudicate commercial, syndicated and large staff loans.

· Source and manage commercial and syndicated lending streams of new business.

· Review and manage commercial portfolio. Follow up on required information for files when necessary.

· Manage non-productive commercial loans, control delinquency for entire lending portfolio.

· Maintain Credit Watch List. 

· Manage the risk of the overall lending portfolio, including commercial, syndicated and retail lending.

· Approve and implement rate changes to lending products in conjunction with the leadership team, approve any discretionary rate requests from members.

· Approve staff limits; approve loans and mortgages above the staff limits, when necessary.

· Preparation of Board reports and attend Board meetings when required.

· Provide exceptional member service, help staff with complex loans and mortgages, and ensure all lending staff provides exceptional member service. Point of contact for escalating member concerns, must provide full resolution of all concerns.

· Pursue new business streams, help develop and implement business campaigns.

· Develop annual business plan and budget in conjunction with the ELT.

· Support all new business and growth opportunities that may arise though the CU’s broader Marketing and Business Development initiatives.

· Other duties as may be assigned.


· Demonstrated leadership abilities, mentoring and coaching skills.

· Advanced knowledge of commercial and retail lending and mortgages.

· Highly organized and able to multi-task in a fast paced environment.

· Advanced knowledge of retail and commercial lending policies and legislation.

· Work collaboratively with other roles to ensure member needs are delivered

· Advanced communication skills.

· Solid computer skills and understanding of banking and loan origination systems.

· Advanced credit and risk management skills.


· University degree and

· 10 years or more experience in credit and risk oversight and management.

· 5 to 10 years of experience in managing people.
