The Opportunity - Chief Operating Officer

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be a key member of the Executive Management Team and will be responsible for all Operations components of the Credit Union. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the COO will contribute directly to the overall growth and success of 1st Choice, its staff, and the members. The COO will participate in the strategic planning process and in the development of the corporate goals, objectives, financial plans, policies and procedures.

 

The COO will be also be accountable for the Wealth Management and Lending functions including retail, commercial, and agricultural lending. This will include ensuring compliance to all aspects of legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.

 

The Chief Operating Officer will lead an environment that will serve the members to the highest standards so that 1st Choice Savings can increase its reputation and stature within the marketplace.

 

The Location – Lethbridge Alberta

Lethbridge is the fourth largest City in Alberta, and is located in the southern portion of the province. Lethbridge is a thriving community of nearly 100,000 people at the center of a trading area that serves approximately 275,000 people in Southern Alberta. Located only one-hour north of the Alberta-Montana border, Lethbridge is closer to the U.S. market than any other city in Alberta. Lethbridge is also easily accessible to major markets across Western Canada by road, rail and air. Their proximity to the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains also places Lethbridge within an hour’s drive to spectacular national parks, UNESCO World Heritage sites and other major attractions.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY - CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Candidate Specification – Part One

Major Purpose of Position

- Oversee all aspects of the branch operations.

 

- Oversee all aspects of the lending functions including retail, commercial, and agriculture lending.

 

- Oversee all aspects of the Wealth Management functions.

 

- Develop and lead the business development activities.

 

- Promote and monitor member service.

 

- Identify emerging market trends and opportunities, and provide analysis and recommendations to the Executive Management Team.

 

- Develop and recommend changes to policies and procedures to ensure a constant drive towards best practices.

 

- Maintain an in-depth knowledge of all current and pending Credit Union deposit and lending services, including the relevant policies, procedures and applicable legislation.

 

- Be fully aware of competitor products and promotions, and provide analysis and recommendations to the Executive team.

 

- Encourage, support, and mentor the team to develop and grow, set individual and team goals and objectives, conduct performance evaluations, and provide on-going and frequent feedback.

 

- Establish and build positive and beneficial relationships in the local community.

 

- Provide leadership by reinforcing best practices and inspiring a positive and collaborative work environment.

 

- Ensure appropriate internal control and risk management procedures are in place and being followed.

 

- Ensure the safekeeping and storage of internal records and documentation.

 

- Conduct financially sound credit adjudication to meet the needs of the members while also supporting the Credit Union’s lending strategies.

 

- Maintain a safe work environment to protect the health and safety of the staff, members, and visitors to the Credit Union.

 

Candidate Specification – Part Two

Education and Experience

Post-secondary education in Commerce, Finance, or a related business discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and personal development.

 

7 to 10 years minimum experience in a senior level operational role with responsibility and exposure to multi branch operations.

 

Direct experience and knowledge within the Credit Union System or similar co-operative would be a definite asset.

 

Strong working knowledge of commercial and agricultural lending. Hands-on experience in a credit granting role would be a definite asset
