Job Description

Reporting directly to the AVP, Commercial Real Estate Lending, the incumbentis responsible for the origination and underwriting of commercial loans, the management of commercial lending relationships and the development, promotion and implementation of commercial lending programs to member credit unions, member co-operatives, other affiliated organizations. This role will provide oversight of the staff retail mortgage program, and partner with BC Credit Unions to provide second opinion review on commercial loans. Because of Central’s unique relationship with its members, these responsibilities are executed in cooperation with the member credit unions in the specified region.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Working with the credit unions, the incumbent is responsible for the origination and underwriting of new commercial loans, the day to day delivery of commercial lending services to the credit unions and their members and general business development duties in the specified region. Working with the Commercial Real Estate Lending team in planning, developing and implementing commercial lending programs and services offered to member credit unions, member co-operatives, other affiliated organizations and business entities.
  • Coordinates financial analysis and presentation materials on loan requests. Works with an assigned Credit Officer, the host credit union and their members to ensure all requisite information is on hand to complete loan reviews. Provides site reports together with other relevant information to expedite the completion of the underwriting at Central.
  • Provides on-going guidance and support to credit officers, credit union lenders and senior management within their territory in credit-granting and loan portfolio analysis and management.
  • Assumes the local presence and accountability for Central’s Commercial Real Estate Lending department in the designated territory as assigned by the AVP, Commercial Real Estate Lending.
  • Provides direct consulting services to individual credit unions on their members’ loan requirements. Provides assistance to facilitate individual credit unions’ portfolio growth and, where facility size warrants, may attend meetings with their members to develop workable credit solutions either for new credit relationships or for restructuring a problem credit situation.
  • Where requested, assists credit unions in a consultative or direct capacity with any problem loan situations. The incumbent may also be required to assist the AVP, Commercial Real Estate Lending and/or the other Regional Manager(s) in dealing with problem loans on Central’s books in their region. 
  • Assists credit unions in the development of promotional materials pertaining to the commercial lending programs of member credit unions. Works with the AVP, Commercial Real Estate Lending in developing suitable marketing initiatives and materials to promote lending products.
  • Supports the AVP,  Commercial Real Estate Lending in developing and managing relationships with other strategic partners and/or other financial institutions. Provides support in the establishment and maintenance of strategic product alliances with other financial institutions in the designated territory to enable member credit unions to expand their commercial and mortgage marketing capabilities.
  • Takes part in the development, implementation of new commercial lending products with credit unions within the designated territory. Provides support to the AVP,  Commercial Real Estate Lending and/or the other Regional Manager(s) with respect to recommendations regarding any policy changes.
  • Management and resolution of delinquent and/or problem loans. Manages the enforcement process, including determination of recoveries and recommendations regarding write offs, as required. Manage all Watch List accounts and ensure appropriate reporting is provided.
  • Assists the AVP,  Commercial Real Estate Lending, with 
    special projects and assignments as outlined within the Annual Goals and as the need arises.

The incumbent may provide direct supervision to one Credit Officer.He/she will be accountable for their performance management, coaching and leadership of the incumbent.

As part of the Commercial Real Estate Lending team, he/she is expected to 
share their experience and market knowledge gained through participation
 within industry events and through ongoing professional & member 
contact.

In day to day interactions with members of the Credit Administration team, the 
incumbent is expected to work in a collaborative and advisory capacity 
sharing specific skills, processes and knowledge gained though their 
years of commercial credit granting experience.

Qualifications

  • College or university degree in finance or a related field – business administration, accounting, economics etc. – or equivalent work experience.
  • Five to ten years commercial lending, credit granting with an emphasis on Real Estate transactions (construction financing and term lending).  Demonstrated ability to source new business and negotiate credit facilities that adhere to the risk parameters and pricing requirements of Central and the Credit Unions. Able to gather and analyse information required to underwrite commercial credits and present for approval. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills. Proven relationship management skills and the ability to manage the appropriate actioning of time sensitive information and interact with many different constituencies including Credit Union CEO’s and commercial lenders, borrowers, and senior management. Able to act with maturity, tact and diplomacy. Must be a self starter and able to work independently or as a member of a team as the situation requires.
  • Strong problem solving skills demonstrated by an ability to develop creative alternatives to address specific business situations and requirements.  The ability to review, understand and analyze lease agreements, Project Monitor Reports, Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessment Reports, Building Condition Reports, AACI Appraisal Reports, Financial Statements etc.
  • Must be thorough and accurate in the analysis and preparation of 
    recommendations for consideration by senior management at Central and 
    credit unions.
  • A considerable amount of travel is expected to be required in working with the various credit unionsand business referral sourceswithin the delegated territory.
