Northern Savings Credit Union is seeking a temporary 2-year Finance & Accounting Officer to join our team.

Primary Purpose:

The Finance & Accounting Officer provides support to the Finance department while performing advanced accounting functions. Under direction, this position assists in the preparation of financial statements and reporting. This role must have an understanding of required legislative and regulatory compliance, and third party requirements as they relate to finance management.  This role is critical in providing streamlined processing to ensure the integrity and accuracy of member transactions while meeting regulatory requirements.

· Maintains knowledge of economic factors and implications for the Credit Union.

· Maintains subject matter expertise in area of delegated responsibility.

Member Service

· Fosters a culture of service excellence.

· Provides effective financial and accounting delivery to benefit members and the organization.

· Presents a professional image to members, internal customers (other staff) and external entities.

· Is an advocate for financial products and services offered by Northern Savings and encourages new members to join the credit union.

· Prepares accurate financial results to promote understanding throughout the organization.

· Embodies and promotes professional image of the Corporate Office.

· Contributes to a positive workplace that is motivating to all staff by operating in a manner which promotes trust, respect, integrity and credibility.

Operational Efficiency:

· Monitors credit union account systems and procedures, and identifies new or improved accounting methods.

· Provides assistance in preparation of the financial statements.

· Is responsible for overseeing and processing staff expense accounts.

· Provides general support and coverage for the Finance Department.

· Stays attuned to opportunities for achieving process efficiencies and interprets the opportunities within Northern Savings.

· Works positively within corporate office and with branches to implement policies and practices in an efficient manner.

Risk Management and Financial Health

· Supports the Finance department in the development and deployment of finance, treasury and accounting programs, which are cost effective and provides good return to the Credit Union.

· Liaises with member appointed external auditors and cooperating with the auditors in providing for an efficient and effective audit process.

· Meets compliance, confidentiality and regulatory requirements and abides by management policy and branch procedures.

· Understands authorities with respect to overrides, waiving service charges and the pricing matrix.

· Fully understands and works within authorities assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

· High School diploma required.

· Completion of post-secondary education is an asset.

· CPA designation preferred or working towards an accounting designation.

Experience:

· Previous accounting experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

· Financial services experience is preferred.

Skills:

· Ability to communicate and liaise professionally with branch staff and member while maintaining confidentiality.

· Working knowledge of accounting software and end user computing tools (e.g Excel).

· Ability to prioritize, organize work within time constraints, under pressure and competing priorities.

· Have an understanding of the required compliance and legislative requirements.

· Analytical and detailed oriented.

· Self-motivated and a self-starter.

· Working knowledge, skills and experience in Microsoft Office.
